Counting down to the May 19 release of The King & I, Faith Evans drops a new music video today (April 21) for another track from her long-awaited duets album with late husband Notorious B.I.G. Titled “Legacy,” the mid-tempo tune features unreleased Biggie vocals in tandem with Evans singing about what was, what might have been and the strong connection between the two that still endures.

Taking a trip back to Biggie’s Brooklyn, New York stomping ground at St. James Place and Fulton Street, Evans revisits the pair’s relationship through home-movie type clips and photos. “I knew from the very first moment / That you were a king fit just for a queen,” she sings. “I could tell from day one that you were for me / Who knew that this love would be the legacy.

“If there were a title track for The King & I, it would be ‘Legacy,’ Evans tells Billboard. “This song absolutely sums up the theme of the album.”

Watch “Legacy,” directed by Rock Davis and Jay Rodriguez.

Produced by Evans and Stevie J, “Legacy” is the fourth selection from The King & Ifollowing earlier releases “When We Party” featuring Snoop Dogg, “NYC” featuring Jadakiss and “Ten Wife Commandments.” The 25-track set, with additional guest appearances by Busta Rhymes, Lil Kim and others, also boasts production by DJ Premier, Just Blaze, Salaam Remi and Chucky Thompson.

If only it were just a dream.

On March 9, 1997, rapper Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace was shot and killed. Twenty years later, the hip hop legend’s murder remains unsolved but his music remains just as relevant.

Working from Wallace’s vault, singer Faith Evans, who was married to Wallace at the time of his death, has recorded an album of duets with the rapper titled “The King & I.”

The 25-track project, which Evans has worked on for more than two years, releases in May and features contributions from Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Lil’ Cease and Lil’ Kim.

“[His music] is still just as impactful, as if he were this new, dope rapper from Brooklyn, now,” Evans told CNN in a recent interview. “Something about his word play, his confidence, he was pretty witty and he was intelligent. It’s absolutely timeless.”

One more chance

Evans and Wallace met at a photo shoot in 1994 and they married just nine days later.

Evans was a studio singer who rose to become the first lady of Bad Boy Records. Wallace — also known as Biggie — was the biggest star on the label, owned by his close friend Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Evans and Wallace had a passionate but tumultuous relationship.

The pair were estranged when she gave birth to his son, Christopher “C.J.” Wallace, Jr., a few months before Wallace was killed.

Their son C.J. is now also in the music industry, but Evans said he hasn’t heard the entire album yet and declined to be on a single.

“I think it may have been a little bit to heavy for him emotionally,” she said.

Speaking with Evans, it’s evident her love for her late husband endures.

“He could make anything into a joke,” she said. “I think that’s why it’s hard for me to stay mad at him.”

Mo Money Mo Problems

On the night of his murder, Wallace was leaving an industry party in Los Angeles when his vehicle came under fire.

His death came just six months after rapper Tupac Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas. The two superstars were symbols of the East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry, which pitted Shakur’s recording label, Death Row Records, against Wallace’s.

Shakur’s murder also remains unsolved.

“Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker interviewed Wallace two days before he died for Vibe magazine — in what would become the rapper’s final print interview.
Coker told CNN he often thinks about the circumstances surrounding Wallace’s death.
“He was supposed to catch a flight that night to go to London,” Coker said.
But, according to Coker, Wallace decided not to go at the last minute.

What the two discussed during the interview became the cornerstone of Coker’s book “Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G.” (The book was later adapted for the film “Notorious.”)

Life after Death

Though Wallace was known for spitting easy lyrics, he also loved acting and was thrilled by an appearance he made in 1995 on the sitcom “Martin,” according to Evans.

Coker said Wallace would have been a natural to play the complicated villain Cornel “Cottonmouth” Stokes on “Luke Cage,” (The role is played by Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali.)

“That would have been what I would have written for him [Wallace], where you have that dichotomy of being a gangster and having a deep sensitivity,” Coker said. “That was him.”

“A lot of that dichotomy of Cottonmouth’s personality, which wasn’t in the comic that we kind of imbued in the character, was very much influenced by Chris,” Coker added.

If Wallace were still alive, Evans said she imagines he’d be involved in both TV and film. But always, she said, there would be music.

“He definitely would have still been making records,” Evans said. “And who knows what else.”

LOS ANGELES – Faith Evans and The Notorious B.I.G. famously met at a photo shoot in 1994 and were married nine days later. What followed would become one of the most legendary love stories in hip-hop history.

Evans has now, 20 years after B.I.G.’s still unsolved murder, created THE KING & I, a new album that tells the story of their life together. The album’s 25 tracks feature newly recorded vocals by Evans melded with vocals by Biggie Smalls, some well-known but also a selection of rare and unheard rhymes from the B.I.G. vault. THE KING & I also includes an impressive list of guest appearances by rap royalty including Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Lil’ Cease, Lil’ Kim, Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Snoop Dogg. Evans has also brought on some of the most acclaimed producers in hip-hop, many of which produced some of B.I.G.’s most famous tracks, including DJ Premier, Just Blaze, Salaam Remi, Stevie J, and Chucky Thompson.

“I remember telling Ms. Wallace years ago that one day it would be really dope if I could do something similar to Natalie & Nat King Cole’s Unforgettable,” says Evans. “Knowing the love that B.I.G. had for Tyanna & Ceejay, I feel it’s my duty to uphold & extend his legacy, especially his musical contributions. This project is my creative reflection of the love we had & the bond we will always have. I’m elated to share this musical journey with our fans!”

THE KING & I will be released on May 19 – just two days before Biggie’s birthday. The album will be available on CD ($18.98), digital download, and streaming from Atco Records, an imprint of Rhino Entertainment. THE KING & I will also be available on vinyl as a 2-LP set ($31.98) on June 9.

The album’s first two singles are: “NYC,” Evans’ love letter to New York featuring Jadakiss, and “When We Party,” the West Coast party anthem featuring Snoop Dogg. Both are available now for digital download and streaming.

In addition to the constellation of stars who appear on THE KING & I, there is one other very special guest: Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace. Her voice is featured, along with those of Evans and Biggie, on multiple interludes that provide a poignant narration of the album. Other guest stars adding harmonies to the interludes include 112, Kevin McCall, Chyna Tahjere, and Jamal “Gravy” Woolard, who famously portrayed B.I.G. in the 2009 film Notorious.

Faith Evans has enjoyed worldwide success as an award-winning singer, songwriter, actress and writer. She has recorded eight studio albums, including the back-to-back platinum smashes, Faith (1995) and Keep The Faith (1998). “I’ll Be Missing You,” her tribute to Biggie, debuted at #1 in 1997, stayed there for 11 weeks, and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Since then, the singer has been nominated for a Grammy Award seven times. In 2008, she released her autobiography, Keep the Faith: A Memoir, which won the African American Literary Award for Best Biography/Memoir. Last year, she took part in the Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour to commemorate the influential record label’s 20th anniversary.

Today, The Notorious B.I.G. is widely recognized as one of the world’s most influential rappers and has sold more than 17 million albums in the U.S. alone. Before his murder in 1997, Christopher Wallace recorded two classic albums as The Notorious B.I.G. His debut Ready to Die arrived in 1994 and helped revitalize the East Coast rap scene with massive hits like “Big Poppa” and “Juicy.”  Life After Death was released in March 1997 just weeks after he was shot and killed in Los Angeles. The record topped the U.S. album charts and featured the hits “Hypnotize” and “Mo Money Mo Problems.” It remains one of the few hip-hop albums to ever achieve Diamond certification from the RIAA.

Before his tragic death on March 9th, 1997, The Notorious B.I.G. delivered one of his most successful songs, the 1995 remix to his Ready To Die track “One More Chance.” Featuring samples from DeBarge’s In a Special Way single “Stay With Me,” the platinum track became the highest-debuting single of all time on the Billboard charts.

In a new mini-documentary from REVOLT TV, producer Rashad Smith and Mary J. Blige, who sang the hook along with Faith Evans, dive into the making of the track, which was all orchestrated by Sean Combs, known as Puffy back then. Watch it above and revisit the original below.

ORS Olive Oil teamed up with The Women of Bad Boy to host a series called Beauty Chronicles Women’s Empowerment Brunch in Chicago recently. It is an extension of the a campaign called No Stereotypes. This women’s empowerment series is paired up with the corresponding Bad Boy Reunion Tour. Faith Evans, Lauriann Gibson and Kima Raynor, Keisha Epps and Pam Long of Total were present at the velvet lounge to discuss their concerns and opinions regarding stereotypes.

When asked about her experience on the conversation stereotypes Faith Evans had this to say. “I realize that there are stereotypes on women of color,” Evans said. “When I came into the industry, I was a church girl. Luckily I was raised that there was a certain way I should present myself and offend people. I didn’t want people to mistake that for being soft. I don’t feel like the particular stereotypes affected me because I have always walked with God. No matter what I had to deal with, I knew I was going to be alright and then it was on to the next thing.”

Laurieann Gibson mentioned followed by saying, “The desire to be someone else must be [taken away] from our communities.”

We also spoke with Dr. Renee Matthews who happened to win two tickets to the Bad Boy Reunion show about her experience at the brunch. “I thought that Steven Jones of The Brand Maverick Entertainment and Ariel the Mogul put on a wonderful event that gave women the space to support each other and have an open dialogue about beauty and empowerment,” she said. “I know it is important to address stereotypes so that we can help the next generation make their way in this world and become successful. If we do not teach them then they will watch general market commercials and read magazines and fall into the trap of a lot of the stereotypes that they have created for and about us. “
